ABSTRACT

 

Mindfulness meditation practices refer to a contemplative practice from Buddhist origin. A growing body of literature is indicating that mindfulness meditation practice positively affects mental health. While most studies have looked into the relation of mindfulness and (neuro) cognitive processes and attention, less effort has been made to asses the association between mindfulness meditation and our conceptualisations of self. The present paper systematically reviews current findings on the relation between mindfulness meditation practice and self referential processing and self focused attention. We have conducted a systematical review of the current literature that included the perspective of self from different disciplines, distinguishing between neurobiology, cognitive psychology. On the basis of our search criteria we have included N articles. Our finding suggest that (...).

A systematical search through the literature was conducted using PubMed, PsychINFO, Google Scholar and Scopus. The search terms were “mindfulness” or “meditation” in combination with “self-referential processing” or  “self-reference” or “self-awareness” or self-focussed attention”.  The search includes papers written in English and published until April 2017.
